BASIC ELECTRICAL COURSE PART 1

3 HOUR COURSE
Our Basic Electrical Course is for the DIY homeowner and is not an electrician course. THIS CLASS IS ELECTRICAL THEORY. PART TWO IS THE PRACTICAL SECTION. YOU CAN NOT DO PART TWO UNTIL PART ONE HAS BEEN COMPLETED.

Content score (practical/info-theory): 2/5

This class is designed to help you understand the basics of the electrical system in your home. How it works, how it’s wired, what breakers do and how the components in your consumer unit protect both you and the cables in your house.

Simple jobs that with a little skill and confidence, you can do yourself. You only need to know some basic rules and know how to check your work to safely complete the task. There are many jobs around the house from changing sockets and switches, to replacing fuses and checking if something is blown. Detecting if there is actually voltage at a socket using a simple plug-in tester or a multi-meter.

How about changing a ceiling light in your room and replacing that old 100W bulb with a new energy-saving LED fixture? Homeowners are always trying to improve their homes and save money, especially with the energy crises we all face. There are plenty of new high-tech switches, LED lights, etc. that you can buy from the DIY store but they are not always as straightforward to connect as you hope.

There are some electrical jobs that you are allowed to do yourself in the home that is perfectly legal to do but any major work should always be left to the professionals. However, when you understand more about the electrical system in your home it will give you confidence when an electrician comes to do the work that what they are telling you makes sense OR doesn’t make sense. In which case you will be in a position to communicate with them in their language and not accept blindly what you are being told. Remember Kilowatt is power and so is Knowledge!

In this class, you will learn what the electrical equipment in your house does and why it’s important, and how to do some basic tasks. You will also learn about low-voltage equipment, AC, DC, different cable sizes and why that’s important. A full list of topics covered is listed below.

Our Basic Electrical Course here at the Great British Woodshop will give you the knowledge you need in a practical way where you will learn how things work and you can ask all the questions you’ve ever had and never knew the answer.

"I really enjoyed this course. The only electrics "experience" I've ever had was in school physics classes! David explained things really well and allowed me to ask lots of questions about things I wanted to do in my home. I'm attending more of his courses soon."

Kelly reviewed: Basic electrical course - part 1 "I attended the Basic Electrics Course on Friday 15th February. David was a great teacher, he explained the course objectives well, asked what my intentions were for the course and explained the information in a really easy manner. I was a complete newbie to Electrics and have come away from the course with a wealth of knowledge and confidence. I will definitely be putting my training into practise myself at my home. Additionally, I now have confidence in larger jobs and explaining to the experts what I need and knowing that i have a little of their language means I feel secure in requesting work by qualified persons without fear."
