Hanging a door

DAY CLASS BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE
In this practical class, you will learn how to hang a door. You will mark out for hinges, and create the mortises in the door and frame with a chisel and a router. Create the mortise for the latch, fit the door handle and hinges and finally hang the door.

The Great British Woodshop practical series classes are a good follow-on from our Skills Classes where you can take the knowledge you have learned and put it to practical use in a more targeted or focused way.

In this class you will hang a door:

  • It involves you marking out for the hinges in both the frame and the door
  • Creating the mortises in the door and frame with a chisel
  • Create the mortise for the latch
  • Fit the door handle
  • Fit the hinges
  • Hang the door to the frame

We pair up the students into groups of two so you have a buddy to help you lift and manoeuvre the door and we will also discuss techniques for performing these tasks on your own.

Maximum of 4 students.

General information for your visit.

Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work, sensible shoes and your own lunch. There is a local shop nearby if you wish to buy lunch or you can bring a packed lunch with you. Tea and coffee is provided throughout the day.

If you have some of your own tools and would like to learn how to use them properly, then you are welcome to bring them and use them on the course. We have a fully equipped workshop so there is no need to bring anything, but some students like to bring their own.

As an enthusiastic DIY-er, who also completed an introductory woodworking course (elsewhere), I've been looking at upgrading my collection of power tools in order to complete woodworking projects faster and to a higher standard. While I've had some idea what tools to look for, I wasn't necessarily confident in choosing or using them. In addition, due to a very limited working space, getting the right mix of multitasking and more specialist tools was of the essence for me.

So glad I spent the time with David learning about how to use so many power tools, some I'd used before but obviously did not fully understand! Some I'd looked at before and thought that I'd never want to or be able to use but I now have the confidence to do so. And I learnt so many extra tips and tricks of the trade from David. It was a very comprehensive, information packed day which was also very understandable, allowing me to put the use of the tools into perspective. It was well paced allowing me to absorb the information but allowing me unhurried time to practice using the tools. David has a good teaching style and I never felt rushed or hurried. David stuck with us until our objectives had been achieved. I highly recommend this day and would be really happy to work with David again.

"Excellent course. David taught us plasterboarding in clear steps and kept us engaged through a mix of direct teaching, questioning and practical experience. He watched us carefully and gave individual hints so that we left feeling confident that we could tackle our projects. Thank you David!"
