Junior DIY Basics – age 10-16

A great overview for children age 10-16.

We will cover:

DIY

Tools

  • Show the safe use of, and how to take care of, tools such as a hammer, a saw, a screwdriver, spanners, pliers, a hand-drill, a glue gun etc.

Safety

  • How to work safely on your projects, especially when you’re using electric tools.
  • Have knowledge of safety equipment (for example: goggles, gloves, masks, ear defenders).

Wood types

  • Learn what the difference is between hardwood, softwood, chipboard, plywood and MDF. For each of them, find out what they’re best used for.

General skills

Learn how to:

  • Adjust the fill valves in a cistern to prevent overflow
  • Learn about different light bulb fittings
  • How to hinge a door back in place
  • Basic under sink plumbing

Home safety

  • Know what to do in the event of a burst water pipe, gas leak or electrical power failure in your home.
  • Have knowledge of hazard symbols and signs (for example: toxic, flammable, irritant, electrical danger, slippery surface)

Consumer Unit

  • Learn how to safely isolate individual electrical circuits at the consumer unit. This includes letting other users know that work is being carried out. (To switch off the relevant circuit).
