Make a child’s chair

Make a child’s chair, day course, suitable for Beginners/Intermediate

DAY CLASS, Beginners/Intermediate

This is a joinery class focusing on the Mortise and Tenon joint. A very traditional method for creating a chair, the M&T joint is one that can be used in many of your home projects so understanding it will be a great asset to building future projects. Whether it’s beds, chairs, doors, cabinets or anything that requires load-bearing strength, the number of glue surfaces and the interlocking nature of the M&T joint will provide a lifetime of quality.

The skills covered in the project class will include marking out techniques and using a variety of power tools to cut and machine the material to the required dimensions. The style of the chair is a miniature dining chair suitable for a small child. It has a wood seat and we would recommend either painting it or applying a varnish on completion. This can be done at home at your leisure.

A terrific gift for a relatively new addition to the family that can be handed down from generation to generation. Hardwood is used in the creation of this chair.

General information for your visit.

Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work, sensible shoes, and your own lunch. There is a local shop nearby if you wish to buy lunch or you can bring a packed lunch with you. Tea and coffee is provided at lunch.

If you have some of your own tools and would like to learn how to use them properly, then you are welcome to bring them and use them on the course. We have a fully equipped workshop so there is no need to bring anything, but some students like to bring their own.

REVIEWS

David is full of knowledge but equally makes you feel that no question is too silly. I loved the way we not only learned health and safety around the tools but how to maintain and change blades etc. He wasn't encouraging us yo spend lots of money and talked about second hand tools too. It was a really interesting day and has given me a lot more confidence in using power tools at home. I hope to come back for more courses. I have shed envy too.

"Great workshop: Learning new skills (such as how to make different joints) and coming away with a sturdy stool which I'm really proud of."

"It was a great day that covered so much and I came away with the confidence to start making well designed and constructed pieces and a better understanding of the tools I have, but hadn't perhaps been using them to their best ability and functions. David's style of teaching is very relaxed, informative and respectful to everyone's abilities and fears. I'd definitely recommend this course to anyone and I'll be looking at doing more courses with David in the future."
